10.30 – 11.30 Bright Ideas and Dead Ends – ELT as it was, is now
(and might be in the future)
by Rob Dean (PearsonLongman International teacher trainer and academic consultant)

This talk will take the form of a light - hearted journey through the last 100 years of English Language Teaching – from the grammar translation methods of the 19th century all the way to the task based and the lexical approaches of the 21st. Our journey will look at how methodologies and ideas were born and developed into what we use today - or in some cases quite rightly confined to the dustbins of history. We will conclude by speculating what the future might hold in terms of language teaching methodology.

11.30 – 12.30 The Real World in the Classroom - Authentic Video Resources and
    Communication Skills
by Frances Eales (the author of “Speak Out”)
There is a plethora of video material available outside and inside the classroom for today's digitally aware students. Besides being a great motivator, what do learners actually gain in terms of skills and language development when authentic videos are used in class? The session explores this question and looks at what might be meant by ‘twenty-first century listening.’ It also offers a range of practical ideas for integrating authentic video and video podcasts into courses.

13.00 – 14.00 Bringing the Real World into the Classroom – Exploiting DVD
by Rob Dean (PearsonLongman International teacher trainer and academic consultant)

For many of us, language study involved learning from books, and nothing more. Of course, books still play an important role in language study, (ask any publisher!) but modern methodology is placing increasing emphasis on modes of study more closely linked with the activities familiar to us in everyday life – activities such as surfing the web, communicating online - and watching and discussing television and DVDs. This session will look at some practical ways of using DVD clips in the classroom for a variety of purposes, and aims to equip teachers with some activities and approaches that can be applied to any DVD material.

    14.00 – 14.30 Closing. Certificates and Teacher’s resource pack
